The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. Angklung diatonis sering disebut dengan dua istilah yang berbeda. Sebagian orang menyebut angklung diatonis dengan istilah angklung Padaeng. Hal ini dikaitkan dengan pencipta angklung diatonis, untuk selalu mengingat nama Daeng Sutigna sebagai pencipta angklung diatonis tersebut.

Sedangkan sebagian lainnya menyebut dengan istilah paduan angklung. Hal ini dikaitkan dengan sifat padu dari angklung yang dimainkan tersebut. Manakah di antara keduanya yang benar ?

Istilah angklung Padaeng menunjuk kepada jenis angklung yang diciptakannya. Orang yang mendengarnya akan ingat kepada jenis angklung dengan ciri-ciri dan sifat-sifat seperti yang pernah diperkenalkan Pa Daeng. Penggunaan istilah ini juga dimaksudkan kepada para pemain agar senantiasa mengingat dan menghormati Daeng Sutigna sebagai pencipta angklung diatonis. Hanya saja istilah angklung Padaeng hanya akan dapat dimengerti oleh mereka yang telah mengetahui seperti apa angklung Padaeng itu.

Sedangkan istilah paduan angklung ini mengadopsi dari istilah lain yang sejenis, yaitu paduan suara. Disebut demikian karena selain dari sejarahnya paduan angklung ITB (pemakai pertama istilah ini) lahir dari paduan suara mahasiswa ITB, ternyata terdapat banyak kemiripan antara paduan angklung dan paduan suara. Pertama adalah dalam hal format pembawaannya, di mana satu kelompok yang terdiri dari puluhan orang memainkan angklung dengan posisi membentuk beberapa baris. Kedua dipimpin oleh dirigen yang membelakangi penonton di tengah pemain, dan yang terakhir aransemen yang dimainkannya mengikuti kaidah harmoni yang sama dengan aransemen paduan suara, sehingga akan memudahkan orang menganalogikan satu sama lain.

Selain itu, istilah paduan angklung secara konotatif dapat membedakan perbedaan pokok antara dua kelompok besar angklung yang ada dewasa ini, yaitu angklung pentatonis dan angklung diantonis. Sesuai sejarahnya, angklung pentatonis dimainkan untuk lagu daerah yang mengutamakan unsur ritmik dari lagu, dan tidak mementingkan unsur harmoni dari paduan bunyi sebagai faktor yang utama. Sedangkan angklung diatonis selalu memainkan lagu-lagu yang diaransir dengan teori harmoni, yang mengutamakan keselarasan dari paduan beberapa angklung yang dimainkan secara bersamaan. Tidak pernah angklung jenis ini dimainkan oleh perseorangan, karena tidak akan menghasilkan paduan bunyi angklung. Hal inilah yang menjadi perbedaan pokok dari angklung diatonis dari pentatonis, yang kemudian dijadikan ciri utama dari angklung diatonis. Dengan demikian istilah paduan angklung secara konotatif lebih dapat menjelaskan maksud dari istilah tersebut.

Setelah mengamati beberapa argumen di atas, dapat kita ketahui bersama bahwa masing-masing istilah mempunyai maksud beserta misi yang dikandungnya. Akhirnya, penilaian pemakaian kedua istilah tersebut diserahkan kepada khalayak, istilah mana yang akan mereka gunakan, sesuai maksud dan tujuan mereka.
