ImageNama lengkapnya Mas Daeng Sutigna sedangkan nama kecilnya Oetig. Kelak teman-teman seasramanya memanggil dengan sebutan “Ecle”, karena kalau ada pertunjukkan selalu mencari tempat duduk yang paling depan, “nyengcle” (duduk). Julukan yang bersifat humor ini ternyata disuakainya sehingga terus dipakai untuk menyebut dirinya sampai akhir hayatnya.

Nama “Daeng” mempunyai riwayatnya tersendiri. Ayahnya mempunyai sorang sahabat dari Makssar yang bergelar Daeng. Daeng dari Makassar ini sangat pandai. Ketika itu ibunya sedang mengandung dan ayahnya berkata bahwa, “Kalau anak yang dilahirkan laki-laki akan diberi nama Daeng, agar pandai seperti sahabatnya itu”. Ketika ibunya benar-benar melahirkan bayi laki-laki, maka bayi itu diberi nama Daeng Sutigna; nama Daeng diambil dari nama seorang sahabat ayahnya yang orang Makassar itu. Kelak sebutan nama Pak Daeng lebih dikenal dimana-mana.

Daeng Sutigna dilahirkan di Pameungpeuk, Garut, sebuah kota di Pantai Selatan Garut yang berhadapan dengan Samudra Hindia, pada hari Rabu tanggal 13 Mai 1908. Ia berasal dari keluarga “dalem” atau “priyayi” Sunda. Daeng mewarisi bakat mendidik dari ayahnya dan bakat seni dari ibunya. Ayahnya bernama Mas Kartaajmadja yang bekerja terakhir sebagai mantri guru di Pangandaran, Ciamis Selatan, suatu tempat yang juga berhadapan dengan Samudra Hindia. Ibunya bernama Nyi Raden Ratna Soerati.

Rupanya asal-usul keluarga Daeng ini dari Ciamis. Umumya pada masa-masa itu, keluarga “dalem” atau “menak” mempunyai dua jalur pilihan untuk meniti karir hidup;  pertama, pada pemerintahan dan kedua pada agama. Yang bekerja di jalur agama, mulai pada pangkat yang tertinggi seperti penghulu sampai juga pangkat yang terendah misalnya penabuh bedug (merbot), seluruhnya merupakan keluarga. Begitu pula yang bekerja pada jalur pemerintahan, mulai wedana, lurah, sampai dengan juru tulis, juga merupakan keluarga. Kakek Daeng dari pihak ibunya adalah wedana Cikembulan (Sewu) Ciamis, sedangkan kakek Daeng dari pihak ayahnya adalah lurah Cikembulan.

Disamping kedua jalur itu, ada juga jalur ketiga yang dipelopori oleh Mas Kartaatmadja, ayah Daeng, yaitu pendidikan. Pada suatu ketika, bupati Manonjaya memanggil Kartaatmadja. “Kamu harus bersekolah, tetapi tidak harus memlih, harus ke Sekolah Guru (“Sekolah Raja”), kalau sudah lulus, kamu harus mendirikan sekolah dan mendidik calon-calon gurunya”.

Ketika itu di Pangandaran belum ada sekolah, bahkan antara Parigi dan Cijulang pun belum ada  sekolah. Kartaamadja sebagai mantri guru kemudian membuka sekolah di Pangandaran. Ia rajin ke desa-desa untuk mencari murid, agar anak-anak desa mau bersekolah. Hasilnya cukup mendapat perhatian dan maju sehingga ia mendapat anugerah gelar Kanduruan Kartaamadja. Di kalangan anak-anaknya, ia dipanggil Ama Kanduruan Kartaamadja. Ia kemudian mendidik guru-guru bantu dangan cara “kilat“, berupa latihan praktik (“ngamagang”) langsung. Ketika itu, karena sekolah kurang, maka tidak semua guru melalui pendidikan Sekolah Guru. Sekaloh guru yang ada baru satu, itupun hanya di Bandung. Jadi, Kanduruan Kartaamadja mengadakan sendiri tenaga guru yang disahkan oleh komisi sekolah setempat, termasuk wedana. Di tempat yang relatif terpencil seperti Pangandaran, Kartaamadja menjadi kreatif. Selain mengadakan tenaga guru sendiri, ia juga merupakan orang pertama yang membuat rumah tembok yang genting dan batu-batanya buatan dan pembakaran sendiri.

Halaman belakang rumahnya luas; di belakang ditanami pohon kelapa, begitu juga di sebrang rumah. Daeng dan saudara-saudaranya disekolahkan dengan biaya hasil penjualan kelapa itu. Keluarga Kartaatmadja juga mempunyai delman, dan kudanya sebanyak delapan ekor. Rumah keluaraga ini terletak di desa Karanggedang dan jaraknya kira-kira satu klometer dari laut. Kelak oleh rakyat Pangandaran, rumah itu diberi nama “Bumi Wisma Karuhun”.

ImageIbu Daeng, Raden Ratna Soerasti, adalah putri wedana Cikembulan. Ia tidak bersekolah seperti umumnya gadis-gadis pada zamannya, tetapi setelah kawin dengan ayah Daeng, Kartaatmadja, ia belajar menulis dan membaca dari suaminya itu. Ia berlangganan majalah Parahiangan, Sipatahunan, almanak Balai Pustaka, dan lain-lain. Buku-buku yang biasanya dibaca ialah : Si Congcorang, Gajah Putih, Putri Mesir, Salah Atikan dan Babah Gaek. Daeng menganggap, bahwa ia mewarisi bakat-bakat seni dari ibunya. Ibunya menguasai keterampilan-keterampilan merenda, mamasak, membuat hiasan-hiasan dinding yang diberi warna dari “kewuk” dan bambu. Ia pandai mengendarai kuda, meniup seruling, dan menabuh gamelan. Ketika sedang mengandung Daeng, ia sedang asyik membuat kegemarannya dengan membuat hiasan jenis tokek berwarna hitam untuk hiasan tembok. Setelah Daeng hadir, dipunggungnya terdapat belang hitam dari atas ke bawah seperti tokek. Konon ada hubungannya antara kebiasaan ibunya ketika mengandung dengan belang hitam pada punggung Daeng.

Mas Kartaatmadja dan Nyi Raden Ratna Soerasti mempunyai delapan orang anak. Daeng adalah anak kelima dari delapan bersudara, secara berturut-turut, mereka itu adalah Anih (almarhumah), Djakaria (H) (Almarhum), Unang Ranuatmadja (almarhum), Imi Soeratmi (almarhumah), Daeng Soetigna (almarhum), Onong Siti Soehara, Oeteng Soetisna (Prof. Dr.; guru besar IKIP Bandung), dan Oejeng Soewargana (almarhum, tokoh pejuang).

Daeng Soetigna berasal dari keluarga besar. Kelak ia juga melahirkan keluarga besar.
