The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. 100 Tahun Daeng Soetigna

ImageBandung - Ketika Indonesia gerah dengan klaim negara tetangganya akan alat musik angklung, sebenarnya banyak tokoh dan bukti-bukti sejarah yang terlupakan. Salah satunya kiprah Daeng Soetigna, penemu angklung diatonis-kromatis.

Daeng Soetigna, lahir di Garut pada 13 Mei 1908, sebagian besar hidupnya tidak lepas dari angklung. Diawali tahun 1938 saat Daeng menjadi guru dan pembina kepanduan (padvinders), hingga tutup usia di Bandung pada 8 April 1984.

Sejak zaman kerajaan Hindu Budha bahkan sebelumnya, angklung sudah ada. Di mana pun di penjuru dunia yang tumbuh bambu, kemungkinan besar ada angklung, alat musik dari bambu yang dimainkan dengan cara digetarkan. Di beberapa daerah di Indonesia, zaman dahulu angklung dipakai untuk upacara adat dan ritual-ritual. Namun, angklung yang dikenal dahulu adalah alat yang bernada pentatonis (da, mi, na, ti, la).

Apa yang dilakukan Daeng sebenarnya sangat sederhana. Dengan modal pengetahuan musik yang diperolehnya dari sekolah buatan Belanda, ia mengembangkan angklung pentatonis menjadi bernada diatonis-kromatis (do-di-re-ri-mi-fa-fi-sol-la-li-si dst). Pengembangan ini kemudian memungkinkan angklung dimainkan lebih luas untuk beragam jenis musik, sehingga perkembangannya pun semakin cepat.

Sebagai pembina kepanduan, Daeng mengajarkan angklung kepada murid-murid pandunya dan tampil di acara-acara perkemahan. Semakin banyak orang yang diajarnya, nama Daeng dan angklungnya pun semakin dikenal. Akibatnya tidak hanya di sekolah, angklung membawa pria dengan tujuh anak itu ke berbagai kepentingan termasuk politik.

Dalam buku Membela Kehormatan Angklung, Sebuah Biografi dan Bunga Rampai Daeng Soetigna yang disusun Tatang Sumarsono dan Erna Garnasih Pirous, dipaparkan betapa Daeng secara tidak sengaja memberikan kontribusi besar dalam sejarah diplomasi Indonesia. Ketika Perjanjian Linggarjati dan Konferensi Asia Afrika 1955 misalnya, kehadiran musik angklung yang dimainkan Daeng beserta kelompoknya mampu meredakan ketegangan.

"Angklung sangat mudah dimainkan oleh siapa saja. Asal mau konsentrasi mengikuti konduktor atau aba-aba kapan dia menggetarkan alat yang dipegangnya, maka semuanya bisa bermain," ujar AD Piraus, menantu Daeng dari putrinya Erna Garnasih Pirous, saat ditemui detikbandung di kediamannya di Jalan Bukit Pakar II/111, Bandung.

"Awalnya para diplomat-diplomat asing itu menolak karena merasa tidak bisa main, tetapi setelah melakukannya sendiri mereka sangat senang. Bahkan saya beberapa tahun lalu bertemu dengan mereka di beberapa tempat terpisah, semuanya mengingat momen memainkan angklung itu," tambah Pirous.

ImageTahun ini genap 100 tahun sejak Daeng dilahirkan. Keluarga serta beberapa pihak lain seperti Masyarakat Musik Angklung (MMA) juga Angklung Web Institute (AWI) menggelar acara yang diberi judul "Daeng Soetigna : A Trail of Invention in World's Music History".

Acara yang digelar di Gedung Merdeka, Bandung, Sabtu (20/12/2008), terdiri dari tiga bagian besar yaitu Diskusi Panel Musik Angklung, Konser Musik Angklung dan Pameran Koleksi Daeng Soetigna.
