The Angklung is a set of traditional bamboo
musical instruments originally based on the pentatonic scale. It most
unique feature is that one instrument represents one tone, so that in
order to be able to play a melody, it requires a certain number of
players.
In 1938 the diatonic angklung was created by Daeng Soetigna, making it
as educative compound to strengthen the spirit of cooperation,
discipline, precision, responsibility etc. It’s symbolized with 5 M
(the Five M) motto such as: Mudah – easy, Murah – cheap, Menarik –
appeals, Mendidik – educational, and Massal – masses. The great
value in giving the players the rare combination of pleasure and
discipline which would give a unique satisfaction both to performers
and audience.
Daeng Soetigna wish to dedicate the angklung will help promote world
peace, which we all love and long for, in the belief that music is a
universal language and popular art throughout the world. Prior to the
Indonesian liberation, angklung become a music instrument that we could
be proud of, making it possible to play the tunes such as those you
will hear in this occasion.
