The Father of Angklung Daeng Sutigna first created the diatonic angklung in 1938. ImageBagi masyarakat Sunda, bambu semestinya bisa juga memerdekakan mereka dari segala masalah, termasuk kemiskinan dan kerusakan alam. Hal itu bukan isapan jempol. Masyarakat Sunda sudah sedemikian lama berhubungan akrab dengan bambu. Sudah banyak pengalaman leluhur yang bisa dipetik. Sejak lahir hingga mati, orang Sunda selalu dipertemukan dengan bambu.
 
Pengurus harian Yayasan Bambu Indonesia, Jatnika, menuturkan, pada saat dilahirkan, bayi-bayi Sunda dahulu dilepaskan dari ari-arinya menggunakan sembilu dari bambu. Lalu, bayi tersebut disimpan dalam ayakan atau saringan besar terbuat dari bambu.

Ketika bayi lelaki disunat, pisau penyunatnya terbuat dari bambu. Saat belajar berjalan, orangtuanya membuat tonggak-tonggak dari bambu di halaman yang bisa dikitari oleh anak tersebut.

Saat makin besar, ia dibuatkan enggrang untuk berlatih keseimbangan. Kakinya akan naik ke bambu yang tinggi dan ia berjalan di atasnya sehingga bisa melihat desanya dari atas.

Makin besar, mereka mengasah keterampilan tangan dan kekompakan dengan teman melalui berbagai permainan, seperti bebedilan atau pistol-pistolan. Mereka juga membuat alat musik untuk hiburan, seperti angklung, calung, dan suling.

Di keluarga, mereka menggunakan daun bambu untuk membungkus makanan seperti bacang dan wajit. Mereka juga memakan rebung atau anak bambu untuk sayur.

Sehari-hari mereka tinggal di rumah bambu dan membuat mebel dari bambu. Perkakas rumah tangga dari tempat sampah (pengki) hingga pengukus (aseupan) terbuat dari anyaman bambu.

Ketika sudah tua, orang Sunda membuat tongkat dari bambu. Saat meninggal, ia ditandu dengan keranda bambu dengan penutup jenazah dari anyaman bambu.

"Di masa lalu, seluruh rangkaian hidup orang Sunda penuh dengan bambu," katanya. Sebagai alat musik, angklung dan suling sudah digunakan orang Sunda sejak abad ke-7.


Pencegah Longsor

Bambu bisa juga dimanfaatkan untuk pengobatan. Rebusan bambu tali berguna untuk mengobati radang usus. Selain untuk bahan suling, bambu tamiang yang memiliki kerak putih mengandung sulfatilamit juga digunakan untuk menyembuhkan luka. Adapun air bambu ater bisa untuk kebugaran, dan rebusan bambu kuning untuk penyakit lever.

Bagi lingkungan sekitarnya, bambu juga mendatangkan keamanan karena bisa menyimpan air tanah sehingga selalu menyediakan air bersih saat kemarau. Bambu juga berguna menjernihkan air sungai serta menahan erosi. "Setelah melalui berbagai penelitian, sebuah batang bambu memiliki 1.115 manfaat," kata Jatnika.

Ada empat bambu yang paling populer dan banyak dimanfaatkan masyarakat. Bambu betung yang besar dan kuat biasa digunakan sebagai tiang rumah. Bambu gombong biasa digunakan untuk struktur bangunan rumah, pancuran, lantai bambu, dan lain-lain.

Bambu tali merupakan jenis yang paling banyak dimanfaatkan karena sangat kuat dan tahan lama. Bambu itu dipakai sebagai bahan pembuat anyaman, bilik (dinding rumah), dan sebagainya. Sementara bambu hitam banyak dipakai untuk mebel dan bilik.

Di daerah tropis, berbagai barang dan bangunan dari bambu akan tahan lebih dari 20 tahun jika penebangan dan pengolahannya baik. Saat ini Yayasan Bambu Indonesia sudah memiliki 26 jenis bambu dan 75 perajin bambu. Galeri bambunya digunakan untuk penelitian berbagai kalangan, baik mahasiswa Indonesia dan luar negeri seperti Jepang, maupun berbagai lembaga pemerintah. Jika orang Sunda percaya bambu bisa memerdekakan diri dan bangsanya pada masa lalu, pasti di masa mendatang melalui berbagai penelitian dan teknologi terapan yang memanfaatkan bambu, akan banyak permasalahan yang bisa diatasi.
